Free Crochet Pattern Sunday

Greetings!

One of the goals I have for Donna's Decembers blog in 2011 is to use it for spreading the art of crochet. Part of this goal is to post a free pattern once a week that can inspire you for a nice little week-long project. I know we all have tough schedules, and some weeks are more crochet-friendly than others, but I think getting into a routine where you're actively making something new every week is awesome. Sometimes these patterns will be ones written by me and others will be patterns that are truly striking to me that I have found online. Long story short, I just want to show you how many amazing patterns are out there that don't cost a dime!

Today's pattern comes from one of the most inspiring fiber ladies out there... Debbie Stroller. I did a little happy dance when her Stitch Nation brand of yarn was released this time last year and you might remember when I mentioned her Stitch 'n Bitch book here. The Sidewalk Shawl is so striking and beautiful, I can't wait to get my hands on some yarn and start stitching!

Designed by Kimberly K. McAlindin

Shawl measures 77" wide (across top edge) x 34" long (not including fringe).

Yarn:
STITCH NATION by Debbie Stoller™ "Bamboo Ewe™": 6 balls 5410 Mercury.

Notions:
Crochet Hook: 5mm [US H-8].
Yarn needle.

GAUGE: 1 pattern repeat = 9½"; 6 rows = 4". Notes: One pattern repeat consists of a pineapple pattern at its widest and the surrounding ch-spaces and shells. Gauge is not critical for this project. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Special Stitches

Shell = Work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in indicated stitch or ch-space.
Increase-shell = Work (2 dc, [ch 2, dc] twice, ch 2, 2 dc) in indicated ch-space.

NOTES: Shawl is worked from lower edge upwards. Work in stitches and ch-spaces indicated only, skip all other stitches and ch-spaces.

ABBREVIATIONS: ch = chain; dc = double crochet; sc = single crochet; st(s) = stitch(es); * = repeat whatever follows the * as indicated; [] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified; () = work directions in parentheses into same st.

  1. I first saw this pattern when you posted it earlier this week. I keep thinking about it and trying to figure out how I can buy this yarn and make it before my husband realizes I've done anything.

  2. Jill--this is the best thing I have heard bc it reminds me of conversations with myself ALL THE TIME. I'm pretty lucky that my Mr. loves to see everything I can make...but doesn't really enjoy all the bags of yarn that goes along with it lol. Oh well. Good luck and I hope you make the shawl. I'm starting mine tonight (very very very excited!)
